OSDD1-B is a complex dissociative disorder (CDD). Imagine that when you're a little kid your identity is cake batter. Most people get put into cake pans, but some kids dissociate so heavily that they put up amnesia barriers, which you can think of like the barriers in a cupcake pan. At some point between 7-9 years old we're all put into the "oven" and our identity solidifies, but the kids that got put into cupcake pans have multiple identities called "alters". This isn’t a perfect analogy because new alters can merge together and new ones can form, but I like it because it makes it clear that there is no "core," "original," or "real one." We are all equally real.
You'll hear alters called "parts" pretty often. This term is debated, but personally we don't like it. We associate it with people who constantly invalidate our existence and tell us we are only parts of one person. We like the terms "alters" and "people." Referring to alters as people is also debated. The main concern is that it makes people think that being a system is like if multiple singlets (non-systems) got stuck in the same body, but I think as long as system hood is explained well, it is easy for people to understand being an alter as just a different way of being a person. Yes, cupcakes are the same thing as a cake, but they aren’t just a slice of cake either (which is what we feel the term "part" implies). Cupcakes and cakes are both their own whole desert.
